Hemorrhoids - Fourteen Tips on How to Avoid Them

Category: Tips — Saturday, September 23, 2006

Hemorrhoids - a burning, itching and bleeding hell one in every two Americans will be damned to before they are fifty years old.

Strangely, fewer than one in five hundred will seek medical help and, of those that do, one in five will require surgery.

Here we list fourteen tips on how to avoid becoming a hemorrhoid statistic…

Definition of Hemorrhoids:

Hemorrhoids (also known as piles) are defined as a swelling and inflammation of veins in anus and rectum. They may cause irritation, itching, pain and/or bleeding.

Tips to Avoid Hemorrhoids:

Before you proceed, please read Constipation - Twelve Tips on How to Avoid It and One Reason Why You Should and follow those tips religiously. Constipation promotes hemorrhoids. Consider the tips below a continuation of the tips given in the aforementioned article on constipation.

  • Never Postpone Bowel Movements (when Nature calls, don’t keep her waiting)
  • Relax (never push or strain during bowel movements)
  • Squat Don’t Sit (less straining is required when you squat during bowel movements)
  • Be Quick (don’t read - sitting on toilet puts pressure on anus)
  • Wipe Less (excessive wiping may cause hemorrhoids)
  • Clean More (after a bowel movement, gently wash with soap and water)
  • Take Warm Baths (baths promote healthy bowel movements)
  • Keep Anus Dry(after baths or showers, dry rectal area completely)
  • Frequent Walks (if you have a sedentary job, walk around for a few minutes every hour)
  • Practice Breathing While Lifting (holding your breath while lifting increases intraabdominal pressure)
  • Reduce Stress (a stressful lifestyle promotes hemorrhoids)
  • Lose Weight (obesity increases rectal vein pressure)
  • Wear Loose Clothing (tight clothing/underwear contribute to hemorrhoids)
  • Improve Posture (poor posture promotes hemorrhoids)

Again, please consider the above list a continuation of the tips given in Constipation - Twelve Tips on How to Avoid It and One Reason Why You Should.

Of course, you should never go to an online source for medical advice. If you suffer from hemorrhoids, there may be other medical causes (that are too scary to even consider let alone spell out here). See your doctor (sooner rather than later).
